headed 'George R' for George III, signed at the Court of St James's on 16th October 1761 by Lord Barrington as Chancellor of the Exchequer, Lord North, who later was Prime Minister during the time of the American War of Independence, and James Oswald as First Lord of the Treasury, total sum authorised for payment being £9,754 12/6, glazed front and back for ease of display, external frame measurement 14in. x 17in.

Provenance: Under threat of French invasion during the Seven Years' War, a series of Militia Acts from 1757 re-established county militia regiments, the men being conscripted by means of parish ballots to serve for three years. Berkshire was given a quota of 560 men to fill and Sir Willoughby Aston, 5th Baronet of Wadley, was appointed as Colonel, as shown in the document. The Berkshire Militia was issued with arms on 6 June 1759 and the regiment was embodied for permanent service on 26 July when the country was on high alert for a French invasion
